Description
UroCare Uroflowmetry
Uroflowmetry is a non-invasive, painless, and fast diagnostic test that measures the speed, volume, and duration of urine flow, typically taking only a few minutes, says the Urology Care Foundation and Tender Palm Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow. It helps diagnose lower urinary tract symptoms, including weak stream, obstructions (like an enlarged prostate), or bladder dysfunction. The patient urinates into a special funnel connected to a computerized sensor that graphs the flow rate
Key Aspects of Uroflowmetry
Why it’s Done: Doctors use this test to determine how well the bladder and sphincter are functioning, specifically for conditions like Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH/enlarged prostate), urinary leakage, or obstruction in the urinary tract.
Preparation:
Patients should have a full bladder and should drink plenty of fluids, avoiding urination for at least 2 hours before the test to ensure accurate results, notes SKH Urology and UCSF Health.
The Procedure: The patient urinates into a specially designed toilet or funnel (uroflowmeter) that measures the flow.
Results & Interpretation:
Normal: Usually an “inverted U-shape” graph, note this YouTube video.
Abnormal: A slow, long, or interrupted curve may indicate an obstructed urethra, weakened bladder muscles, or an enlarged prostate.
